Motivation

Definition

Motivation, in the sense of Performance at work and personal satisfaction, is composed by 3 factors: Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose.

  • Autonomy โ€“ the desire to be self directed
  • Mastery โ€“ the urge to get better at stuff
  • Purpose โ€“ the object toward which one strives

Frederick Herzberg’s two-factor theory claims that there is a set of motivators and hygiene factors that cause job satisfaction.

Unlike traditional management belief money is not a motivator (i.e. “bonuses don’t work”). When work requires cognitive skills, when it’s not just the simplest manual labor, money is just a hygiene factor.
